How does it work?

A hovercraft is a vehicle that flies on a cushion of air. The air cushion is provided by a fan which also provides forward thrust. The hovercrafts skirt acts like a gasket and traps air under the hull, air builds pressure and lifts the hovercraft.

Can it go up and down a boat ramp?

Yes. The Renegade will go up and down any accessible boat ramp.

How long does it take to learn to drive?

Renegade is designed to be very easy to drive. Most operators learn basic skills in 5 – 10 minutes.

Is a Hovercraft loud?

Some hovercrafts do make a lot of noise. Many factors contribute to noise in a hovercraft, engine choice and airflow are two of the most important. Typically 4-stroke engines are much quieter than 2-stroke engines being used by many manufactures. Low revving 4- stroke engines are quiet and smooth operating. Airflow is incredibly important as smooth air produces more power with less noise. Renegade uses a huge high flow 900 mm duct with ultra clean unobstructed airflow. This is how you make a hovercraft quiet.

Is the Renegade less noisy than other hovercraft?

Yes. Absolutely. The Renegade is by far the quietest hovercraft being manufactured today. Manufactures will give misleading answers as to the noise generated by their hovercraft. Quiet hovercrafts have large diameter fans turning slowly in clean airflow. The Renegades AeroDrive system provides all of these. Notice the fan intake on the Renegade; it looks very similar to a jet aircrafts engine intake. Now take a look at other manufactures, is the airflow into the fan clean? Or is their engine and drive system making the air turbulent and noisy?

What is the gas mileage?

Our highly efficient AeroDrive system combined with a fuel injected 4-stroke engine give the Renegade an unprecedented 15 miles per gallon at cruise speed. In the hovercraft industry we typically measure fuel economy in terms of gallons per hour. The Renegade uses 1.5 gallons (5.7 L) per hour of operation at cruise speed (25 – 30 mph).

Do I need a license to operate it?

No specialized license is required. Hovercraft operation follows the same rules as pleasure boats in all countries.

Does the hovercraft operate on ice?

Hovercrafts operate very effectively on ice. The hovercraft “foot print” is very small. The impact is actually 90% less than the pressure applied by a human foot. This allows the hovercraft to operate on very thin or even broken ice with ease. The ability to safely operate on ice is becoming popular with recreational enthusiasts as well as professional rescue teams.

Can the Renegade be driven on the road?

Yes the Renegade can technically be driven on the road or through parking lots. It is not a registered motor vehicle so in most countries operating on a motor way is not legal.

How do I load and unload it?

Renegade trailers are very easy to load and unload. Unloading takes about 90 seconds and loading takes about 120 seconds. The hovercraft can be launched on land or in the water. Most choose to land launch because of its simplicity. Unload the Renegade by disconnecting it from the tow vehicle, remove straps, tilt nose up and slide the craft off. Loading is opposite with the addition of using a hand operated winch to easily pull the craft onto the trailer.

What is payload?

Payload on the Renegade is determined by the amount of weight (passengers + gear) the hovercraft can accelerate to speed on water. Land based payload is always much higher and some manufactures misrepresent maximum payload by using this number. For example the Renegade IQ will haul 600 lbs (272 kg) on land or ice yet our listed payload is 460 lbs (209 kg).

How does a hovercraft impact the surface it’s operating over?

Hovercrafts are very environmentally friendly, especially to the surface it’s operating on. Hovercraft impact the surface with 8 – 10 lbs per square foot, this is 1/10 the pressure of an average human foot. Water grass and weeds can be run over without consequence of smashing them, in fact most plants that are run over by hovercraft immediately spring back up and return to normal.

What type of skirt does the Renegade use?

Renegade uses a segmented skirt system. 56 individual segments form the skirt system. Segments are individually repairable and replaceable in the field.

What about maintenance?

All hovercraft require maintenance. Well-designed hovercrafts require considerably less maintenance when they are manufactured properly and from the correct materials. Renegades use high strength carbon fiber, Kevlar and corrosion resistant stainless steel to provide unmatched reliability and durability. The Renegades superstructure is incredibly strong and lightweight further reducing overall maintenance and skirt repair.

Typical maintenance consists of checking oil, adding fuel and occasionally changing a skirt (2 min.). The engine is easily accessed by removing the cover. Skirts can be changed in the field or on the trailer.

What’s the real story about weight?

It’s important. Very important. The weight of a hovercraft is absolutely critical to its operational capabilities and its long term maintainability. Heavy hovercraft operate less effectively, burn more fuel, require more maintenance and generate more noise than lighter more well designed hovercraft.

Other manufactures will tell you their hovercraft is heavy because its more safe, more durable and made from better materials. It is true, HDPE and fiberglass can be made to be strong and durable inexpensively. Kevlar and carbon fiber are also very strong and incredibly durable. A side effect of using quality materials is that they can increase initial cost. Savings is recouped through durability, low maintenance and ease of operation.

How do I tow it?

Our simple trailer is lightweight and able to be towed by virtually any 4 cylinder car. Overall tow weight is less than 600 lbs. Our simple trailer allows the Renegade to be launched just about anywhere. One person can quickly load or unload the Renegade on land or in the water.

Is the fan protected?

The fan is protected on the front intake side by a stainless steel protective guard. The rear of the fan is protected by control surfaces and airflow straighteners. Other manufactures use power robbing guards at the rear of the fan, Renegade uses technology.

Can the Renegade be shipped overseas?

Yes. Our shipping department can arrange the shipment for you by Air or by Sea. Single unit orders are shipped in a crate by Air or LCL by ocean container.

How many fit into a shipping container?

Two Renegade units with trailers comfortably fit into a 20 ft. container. Eight Renegade kit units with trailers fit into a 20 ft. container.

How do I learn to fly my hovercraft?

Training is included with the purchase of every Renegade hovercraft. Training is conducted at our facility at no cost. Onsite and overseas training packages are available.
